“Men join fraternities. Leaders of men join Sigma Chi.”
-John Wayne
The Sigma Chi fraternity was founded on the principles of friendship, justice and learning. Born out of strife and aimed at bringing strength of values to young men, Sigma Chi has long been the preeminent leadership-based fraternity in the nation. Founded in 1855 at Miami University, we are one of the oldest and largest international fraternities in the world.
The Beta Xi Chapter of Sigma Chi is committed to providing the best possible experience and opportunities for its members. Founded in 1916, we have made for ourselves a long, rich history at UNM, striving to bring our values to the forefront of the student body, and establishing ourselves as leaders, both on campus and in the community. With this goal always in mind, we seek potential members by what we call the Jordan Standard. We admit no man to membership who is not believed to be:
• A man of good character;
• A student of fair ability;
• With ambitious purposes;
• A congenial disposition;
• Possessed of good morals;
• Having a high sense of honor;
• And a deep sense of personal responsibility
Sigma Chi, like most other fraternities, provides all the usual benefits of fraternity life. We have the largest fraternity property on campus, participate in intramural athletics, and help one another with studies. Additionally, due to our long-established presence on campus, we have one of the largest networks of alumni of any fraternity in New Mexico, which can ultimately lead to career advice, business contacts, and job placements. Prominent Beta Xi Chapter alumni in the Albuquerque area include Brothers Tom Popejoy, Bernie Butterfield, UNM Regents Raymond Sanchez and Don Chalmers, and past UNM Vice-President Marvin Johnson. We hope you consider joining our brotherhood and being part of the Sigma Chi legacy. We are confident that we can help make your UNM experience a more meaningful one. No matter what it is that you’re looking for, you’ll find it here, and we’ll help you find it in yourself.
