Fraternity and Sorority Life, often shortened to FSL, is a community of values-based organizations where students build meaningful relationships, grow as leaders, succeed academically, serve others, and contribute to something larger than themselves.
A fraternity or sorority is more than a club or a collection of Greek letters. It is a community built through shared experiences, mutual responsibility, and a commitment to helping members and the people around them thrive.

A Community Built on Purpose
College can feel like a very big place while you are still figuring out where you belong.
Fraternities and sororities help students create smaller communities within UNM. Members connect through chapter activities, academic support, leadership experiences, service, campus involvement, and everyday life together.
Every organization has its own identity, history, traditions, and membership experience. Across the community, however, UNM Fraternity and Sorority Life is grounded in five shared pillars.
Our Community Pillars
Belonging
We create communities where students can build genuine relationships, feel valued, and develop a stronger connection to UNM.
Belonging is more than being included. It means being known, supported, respected, and able to contribute as your full self.
Scholarship
We encourage students to take ownership of their education and support one another in reaching their academic goals.
Membership should strengthen a student’s ability to succeed, persist, and make the most of their UNM experience.
Leadership
We develop servant, proactive, and curious leaders who are prepared to listen, act, solve problems, and strengthen the communities around them.
Students practice leadership through chapter responsibilities, council involvement, collaboration, decision-making, and campus engagement.
Service
We use our time, talents, and resources to support others and address the needs of our campus and broader community.
Service is not simply an activity to complete. It is a responsibility to contribute with care, humility, and purpose.
Accountability
We take responsibility for our choices, uphold shared expectations, and address behavior that does not reflect our values.
Strong communities are built when members care enough to be honest, follow through on commitments, learn from mistakes, and hold themselves and one another to meaningful standards.

Four Councils, One Community
UNM’s recognized fraternities and sororities are represented through four governing councils:
- College Panhellenic Council
- Interfraternity Council
- National Pan-Hellenic Council
- United Greek Council
Each council offers a distinct membership experience, and every chapter has its own values, traditions, culture, and process for welcoming new members.
You do not need to know which council or organization is right for you before you begin. Exploring your options, attending events, meeting members, and asking questions are all part of finding a community that aligns with who you are and who you hope to become.

The UNM Fraternity and Sorority Life Office works with students and organizations to strengthen belonging, academic achievement, wellness, social responsibility, and connection to the University.
Through advising, education, advocacy, support, and collaboration, we help students navigate the fraternity and sorority experience, develop stronger organizations, and live their values with care, accountability, and purpose.
