Choosing a fraternity or sorority is a personal decision. The best way to understand an organization is to meet its members, attend events, and ask questions about what membership is really like.

You do not need to ask every question at once. Start with the topics that matter most to you and continue learning throughout the recruitment or membership-intake process.

About the Chapter

  • What makes this chapter different from other organizations?
  • What are members most proud of?
  • What does the chapter want to improve?
  • Why did you choose to join, and why have you stayed?

Look for specific answers that show how the chapter’s actions reflect its stated values.

About the Membership Experience

  • What does a typical week look like for a member?
  • What happens during the new-member or membership-intake process?
  • Which meetings, programs, and activities are required?
  • How do members balance the chapter with classes, work, family, and other commitments?

A chapter should be able to explain its expectations clearly and give you an honest picture of everyday membership.

About Support and Belonging

  • How does the chapter help new members build relationships?
  • How are members supported when they are struggling?
  • How does the chapter welcome students with different backgrounds and experiences?
  • What academic support or accountability does the chapter provide?

Pay attention to how members treat one another, prospective members, and people outside the organization.

About Leadership and Involvement

  • What leadership opportunities are available to newer members?
  • What service or community involvement does the chapter participate in?
  • Are members encouraged to get involved elsewhere at UNM?

Membership should help you become more connected to the University, not limit your experience to one organization.

Questions to Ask Yourself

After spending time with a chapter, pause and reflect:

  • Do I feel comfortable being myself around these members?
  • Do I feel respected when I ask questions?
  • Do the chapter’s actions match its values?
  • Can I realistically meet the organization’s expectations?
  • Would this community support my academic and personal goals?
  • Am I choosing this organization for myself?

Trust what you observe and how you feel, not only what you are told during recruitment.

Take Time to Decide

Attending an event, completing an interest form, or receiving an invitation does not require you to join.

Explore your options, speak with people you trust, and take the time you need to make an informed decision.
