Families

Families, guardians, and other supporters can play an important role as students explore fraternity and sorority membership. Learning about the experience, asking thoughtful questions, and encouraging students to make informed decisions can help them navigate membership successfully.

Fraternities and sororities at The University of New Mexico are student-led organizations with different histories, traditions, expectations, costs, and membership processes. Our Families section is designed to help you understand the community, support your student, and find the right information when questions or concerns arise.

Supporting Your Student

Students should take the lead in exploring membership, communicating with organizations, and making decisions about their involvement. Families can support that process by helping students think through their goals, responsibilities, and the commitments associated with membership.

This page includes practical guidance, conversation starters, and information about when a family member may need to contact the University.
